Apr 01, 2009To harden I've found that heating the hammer to right above magnetic and then cooling the whole thing in water gets it deeply hardened. Then, to temper it I put it in the vice with a mild steel heat shield placed over the threads of the vice and use a torch to heat from the center of the eye until the face and pein reach the bronze to purple range. What is heat treatment steel? What is heat treatment steel? This heat treatment process carried out for steel parts which have been already hardened, in order to reduce bitterness and unequal stress develop as a result of hardening. This process reduces brittleness and hardness but improves the tensile strength of Steel. It increases the toughness of Steel at the expenses of loss of some hardness.Heat Treatment- Annealing, Normalizing, Hardening, Tempering, Nitridi

I noticed under various topics the discussion of annealing and case hardening. Having been a toolmaker and involved with heat treating for 30+ years I don't see how you can apply any amount of heat to an action or critical part without knowing what the material you are working with such as 1010, 1018, 8620 etc.Case Hardening at Home - Practical MachinistMay 31, 2016Also read that a long soak in melted hardening salts will help to assure a deep hardening. Steel would likely be 1018 or T1. Also heard that hardening salts will eat through a stainless steel envelope made of the usual heat treat foil so not sure what sort of crucible would be needed for a good soak time. Thanks, Randy
May 07, 2013Discussion during the meeting helped to clarify that the amount of size change during heat treatment was not important. What was important was that it be consistent part-to-part, load-to-load and batch-to-batch. The manufacturer and the heat treater proceeded to list all of the variables that would affect size change during heat treatment.Dimensional Changes After Heat TreatmentMay 07, 2013Discussion during the meeting helped to clarify that the amount of size change during heat treatment was not important. Annealing (steel). A heat treatment used to produce a soft, coarse pearlite in a steel by austenitizing, then furnace cooling. Bainite. A two-phase micro-constituent, containing a fine needle-like microstructure of ferrite and cementite that forms in steels that are isothermally transformed at relatively low temperatures.First off, to my knowledge (and I could be wrong), hex bar is tool steel, not mild. Tempering is the reheating of the part to a temperature well below the hardening temperature to reduce the hardness and increase the toughness. Chapter 2 Fundamentals of the Heat Treating of Steel / 11 Steel, however, is by far the most widely used alloy and for averygood reason. Heat Treatment Processes. Hardening Hardening involves heating of steel, keeping it at an appropriate temperature until all pearlite is transformed into austenite, and then quenching it rapidly in water or oil. The temperature at which austentizing rapidly takes place depends upon the carbon content in the steel used.Heat Treatment- Annealing, Normalizing, Hardening Hardening Mild Steel Heat Treating general discussion Annealing The Steel parts produced by mechanical operation process such as casting, Normalizing Normalizing is a heat treatment process similar to annealing in which the Steel Hardening Hardening is a heat treatment process carried out to increase the hardness of Tempering This heat treatment process carried out for steel parts which have been already Nitriding Nitriding is a process of surface hardening in which nitrogen gas is used to obtain Cyaniding Cyaniding is also a surface hardening process in which the heated parts to be hardening mild steel - Practical MachinistOct 07, 2009Wrought mild steel will survive with the severest quench you can devise. Heat treating and tempering mild cold rolled steel is a process slightly more complicated than simply heating and quenching the part that you want to harden. Tempering the steel has the effect of hardening the cold rolled steel while at the same time helping to avoid the brittleness inherent in a simple heat and quench operation. How to Temper Mild Cold Rolled Steel eHowHeat treating and tempering mild cold rolled steel is a process slightly more complicated than simply heating and quenching the part that you want to harden. Tempering is a type of heat treatment for iron-carbon alloys. These alloys are more formally called steel. In general, the process for heat treating steel is accomplished by heating, rapid cooling, and reheating of the chosen material. When steel is cooled quickly, the atoms are frozen in an unstable position.Laser Hardening - an overview ScienceDirect TopicsThis is referred to as case hardening. The core is the inner portion of material not affected by the heat treatment. Processes such as induction hardening, laser hardening, and flame hardening are used to heat the near surface region of a steel component to the desired temperature. Solid solution hardening stresses a metal's crystal structure by adding alloying metals that don't fit easily in the base metal's crystal lattice. This added stress increases tensile strength and decreases ductility. Transformation hardening is the heat-quench-tempering heat treatment cycle addressed earlier in this article.People also askWhat is hardening of steel? What is hardening of steel?Hardening Hardening is a heat treatment process carried out to increase the hardness of Steel. The use of solution treating alone or solution treating followed by precipitation age hardening is commonly used with precipitation hardenable stainless steels. Solution treatment During manufacturing processing, most materials can be work-hardened, limiting the ability to further process the material.Predicting Size Change from Heat Treatment Production Hardening Mild Steel Heat Treating general discussion In another example, according to a Latrobe Steel data sheet, 17-4 precipitation hardening stainless steel can typically be expected to shrink by 0.0004 to 0.0006 inch/inch (size change per unit of length) when aging from Condition A to Condition H-900 and 0.0018 to 0.0022 inch/inch when aging from Condition A to Condition H-1150.
